Puja, Chanting, Dhamma Talks

Buddha Puja

During Sunday Services, we conduct a brief Buddha Puja, which is a short ceremony where food and  drink, flowers, incense, and candlelight offerings are made to the Buddha in the spirit of generosity and selflessness, and with reverence and gratitude.  After the objects are placed on the Altar, we engage in a brief period of Pali Chanting.  Chant books are provided.

When practiced mindfully, Buddha Puja can enhance one's connection to Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha, decrease attachment and ego, and imbue the mind with gladness and joy -  which we later bring to our Meditation. This quality - called Pmoja in Pali - is a gladness which can blossom into a blissful state, which is an important stage or factor on the Path to Insight. Thus, rather than being a purely "religious" practice, Buddha Puja - like most of the practices in Theravadin Buddhism - has a direct connection to our Meditation. And for some, it becomes a deeply intimate way to connect with the Triple Gem.

During Classes and Sittings Periods during the week, unless requested, there is no Buddh Puja, and we focus directly on the Meditation and a brief Dhamma Talk and/or Discussion.

Chanting, Dhamma Talk

Chanting

Chanting is a proven method to help quiet the mind, increase humility and reverence, and connect more fully with the Triple Gem. When we engage in group chanting about the Buddha or one of the Teachings, we share a common aspiration of goodwill and a dedication to the wholesome, as well as remind ourselves of the unique qualities of the Buddha. This, in turn,  inspires us and strengthens our Meditation Practice.

Dhamma Talks

Dhamma Talks are not only a great way to learn about Buddhism in general, but they often concern a topic relevant to our Meditation Practice. As importantly, a Dhamma Talk can inspire one to practice more diligently and to reflect upon - and attempt to embody - the Dhamma.

After the Talk, there is an opportunity for questions, as well as a brief Discussion.
